    I found another seller who stated this was Bakelite. I can't confirm that this is the case or that it isn't.
    The brass lens twists to adjust the focus. My guess would be that this is from the 1930's.  I am guessing that the quality of counterfeits was inferior then and a lit magnifier might just do the job.  This is a very interesting item for a collector of currency and it looks great on a counter or in a glass case, even with the chips.
